SALINE COUNTY (KATV) — Saline County is cracking down on illegal dumping. The Saline County Regional Solid Waste Management District authorized an Illegal Dumps Control Officer to issue environmental citations to Saline County Residents who violate state and local solid waste laws and ordinances. The District Board determined the fines were necessary to help decrease dumping trash along private and public property and along county roads. In the past, the district has been issuing warning citations to educate residents of Saline County on the laws that protect the environment. Citations will result in a fine of up to $10,000. Channel 7 News got a firsthand look at the new enforcement operation on Wednesday while riding along with Illegal Dumps Control Officer, Shane Knight. "I get a call out to Shaw Bridge Road twice a week," said Knight. Knight says Shaw Bridge Road is one of the worst county roads in Saline County for Illegal Dumping. Not a mile down the road, Knight noticed new waste along the rural road. Knight combed through the trash looking for any sign of a name or address to locate the one who left the waste. "It looks like the materials have been burned it's kind of a dead end here," said Knight. If Knight is able to locate the person the new waste belonged to, he said he can issue them an environmental citation for a public nuisance and household waste violation. Not far from Shaw Bridge Road, Knight has been working on a private lot to remove burned down debris. Knight says he can cite the offender for illegally using the lot a as disposal facially and an open burning violation. Part of Knight's patrol takes him to an intersection outside of a Saline County landfill. There he found a driver with a trailer that wasn't covered with a tarp; otherwise known as an unlawful transport violation. Knight says he can also cite the driver for waste falling out of the vehicle if the waste isn't strapped down properly. Knight pulled over the driver. "I do want to speak with the operator of the vehicle I want to see why they aren't covered. I want to see why they haven't take measures to keep something from blowing out," said Knight.
